In the 2026 NDP leadership election, the federal NDP elected as leader of the federal party, democratic socialist Avi Lewis, whose platform included creating public options for groceries, telecommunications, postal banking, and pharmaceuticals, a national rent freeze, the construction of 1 million public housing units, a wealth tax on the top 1% and a Canadian Green New Deal, which will halt any new natural gas projects and lead to a green energy transition. The federal NDP is formally affiliated with the provincial wings of the party and share organizational ties with one another.
